Cystocentesis is common procedure where a needle attached to a syringe is inserted through the skin on the lower abdomen and directed into the urinary bladder to obtain a sample of urine. Obtaining a urine sample this way eliminates any contamination that can occur if urine is collected when the patient is urinating. This routine procedure is well tolerated by dogs and cats and usually does not require sedation. Urine obtained in this way is typically evaluated for infection by performing a urine culture.
